A Plainfield, Connecticut mom is furious after her 13-year-old son, Derek, who is diagnosed with ADHD, received a cruel so-called “award” from his teacher. Tera Cooper, Derek’s mother, was confused as to why the teacher at Plainfield Central School would think it’s funny to give something like this to her son.
Derek’s certificate was titled “#ADDaward” and reads “Most likely to be distracted by…look something shiny!” It also features a picture of a zombie being held up by a balloon and a small gold ribbon that says “good work.”
Cooper shared, “He had tears in his eyes. He’s embarrassed because he had to accept it in front of his entire class.” Despite the teacher’s lack of consideration, the school and the teacher were aware of Derek’s ADHD. Cooper said, “He is on a 504 plan at the school, so she is aware of it. I don’t know if she thought it was funny, but it’s not funny. She’s the teacher. It’s supposed to be a safe place.”
A 504 plan is an educational program for students who require certain accommodations but do not need special education. These plans are designed to ensure that students are not discriminated against based on their disabilities.
Principal Scott Gagnon stated that he met with Derek’s parents and assured them that the matter would be resolved promptly and in the best interest of the student and his family. However, Cooper is considering legal action to hold the school administration accountable and prevent such incidents from happening again.
Derek did receive two other awards from the same teacher, but it doesn’t excuse the hurtful behavior. This incident highlights the need for teachers to be more understanding and supportive, particularly towards students with disabilities like ADHD. Making fun of a student’s disability is not only inexcusable but also detrimental to their overall well-being and educational experience.
