He explained that basal cell skin cancers are the most common type, constituting 95 percent of all cases, and are usually curable. In early stages, when the growths are superficial, a surgeon can easily remove the affected area.
However, Dr. Mirkin cautioned that when skin cancer affects areas around the ears, nose, eyes, or mouth, it can penetrate deeper layers of skin, requiring additional surgery. “The general norm is to continue making incisions until there are no more cases of skin cancer in the specimens that have been taken. As a result, this was a rather lengthy operation,” he elaborated.
While basal cell carcinomas are more prevalent, squamous cell carcinomas are a rarer but different type of skin cancer. Dr. Mirkin pointed out that with squamous cell carcinomas, surgeons can aim to remove the tumor and create a margin of healthy tissue around it. However, the rarity of squamous cell carcinomas makes this circumstance less common.
