Are you looking for a fun and creative DIY project? Well, look no further! In this article, I will show you how to transform a vintage washboard into a stunning farmhouse decor piece. With just a few simple steps, you can give new life to an old item and bring a touch of rustic charm to your home.
Before we get started, let’s gather the materials we’ll need. You can find everything you need at your local thrift store or online. Plus, I earn a small commission from qualifying purchases, so it’s a win-win situation!
To begin, you’ll want to clean the vintage washboard thoroughly. Give it a good scrub in the kitchen sink with warm, soapy water to remove any dirt and grime. This will ensure that the paint and other materials adhere properly to the surface.
Once the washboard is clean and dry, it’s time to remove any lint or debris. Take a wooden shish kabob skewer and gently scrape along the ridges to clear out any stubborn lint. This step is important to ensure a smooth surface for painting.
Now, let’s add some character to the washboard. Grab a bottle of Rust-Oleum Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator in Gray and apply a coat to the wood. This will give it a beautiful weathered look, perfect for farmhouse-style decor.
Once the washboard has dried, it’s time to add some decorative elements. I used a Redesign With Prima Everyday Farmhouse decor transfer. These transfers are incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of rustic farmhouse projects. There are many other options available on Etsy as well.
Using the transfer, carefully apply it to the washboard. You’ll find that some parts of the transfer fit perfectly on the washboard, like it was made for it. This will add a unique and personalized touch to your farmhouse decor.
To protect and enhance the wood, I recommend using Dixie Belle’s Big Mama’s Butta. Apply it with a rag, and you’ll immediately notice how the dried-out wood comes back to life. Plus, it leaves a pleasant scent. I used the Flannel scent, but there are other options available as well.
Now, let’s add some finishing touches to our washboard farmhouse decor piece. I found this divided metal container at Hobby Lobby, and it complements the washboard perfectly. It’s a great storage solution for small items and adds an extra rustic touch to the overall look.
To complete the farmhouse aesthetic, you can stage and accessorize the washboard with a potted plant (potted in brown paper), jute, and vintage clothespins. These elements will add warmth and coziness to your home.
That’s it! With just a few simple steps, you’ve transformed a thrifted washboard into a beautiful farmhouse decor piece. The weathered wood, farmhouse transfer, and added accessories create a charming and unique look that will impress your guests.
