Target, one of the leading retail giants, has announced the closure of nine of its outlets due to the rising issue of theft and organized retail crime. Despite implementing additional security measures and utilizing theft-deterrent tools, these challenges have persisted, leading to the difficult decision of closing these stores.

Affected Markets and Remaining Stores

Here are the affected markets and the remaining stores in each region:

New York City:

  • Harlem: 517 E 117th St. (96 stores remaining, employing over 20,000 team members)

Seattle:

  • University Way: 4535 University Way NE
  • Ballard: 1448 NW Market St., Ste. 100 (22 stores remaining, employing nearly 4,000 team members)

San Francisco/Oakland:

  • SF Folsom: 1690 Folsom St.
  • Oakland Broadway: 2650 Broadway
  • Pittsburg: 4301 Century Blvd. (32 stores remaining, employing over 6,400 team members)

Portland:

  • Galleria: 939 SW Morrison St.
  • Powell: 3031 SE Powell Blvd.
  • Hollywood: 4030 NE Halsey St. (15 stores remaining, employing more than 2,500 team members)

While it is unfortunate to witness the closure of these stores, it’s important to note that Target will still have over 150 operational stores in these regions.

Strengthening Security Measures

To combat the escalating theft issues, Target is taking further steps to bolster their security. They are employing locking cases for certain merchandise and collaborating with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations division.

Target acknowledges that while they are investing significantly in their business, it is an issue that cannot be resolved independently. Cooperation and support from both the public and law enforcement are essential to effectively tackle this growing problem.

Together, we can make a difference in ensuring a safe and secure shopping experience for everyone. Let’s stand united against retail crime and protect our communities.
