Killer hornets are found in the US, and they are among the most dangerous bugs in the world.

If you’re like me, you’ll understand the urge to be cautious around flying creatures that can sting. Bees and wasps might be important for our ecosystem, but having them buzz around your picnic blanket during a relaxing lunch outdoors isn’t exactly pleasant. And it seems I’m not alone in feeling that way.

In recent years, there has been growing concern about the invasion of the Asian giant hornet, also known as the “murder hornet,” in the United States. These intimidating insects were first spotted in the US back in 2019, and since then, numerous sightings have been reported, making people even more terrified than usual.

The most recent sighting was in Washington in August 2021. These murder hornets are exceptionally dangerous, with stings said to be as painful as the combined stings of three to ten yellow jackets. As their name suggests, they also pose a threat to honeybees, capable of obliterating entire beehives, often decapitating thousands of bees in the process.

However, it’s not just honeybees that should be worried – their powerful sting can also be dangerous for humans. While such incidents are rare, there have been unfortunate cases where a murder hornet’s sting has resulted in fatalities.

Thankfully, authorities are taking action to combat this new menace. The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) has stepped in and implemented measures to deal with the danger these insects pose. Bug experts have even come up with an innovative strategy: by placing markers on captured wasps, they can track them back to their nests and destroy them, effectively putting an end to their spread.
