A Heartwarming Story of Unexpected Homeownership

For the past two decades, 75-year-old Jane Sayner has called St. Albans, Melbourne her home. During this time, she rented a cozy two-bedroom apartment from her landlord, the late multimillionaire John Perrett. Jane faithfully paid her weekly rent of AUD$250 since she first moved in. Little did she know that her life was about to take an extraordinary turn.

A Worried Uncertainty Turns Into Joy

In September of 2020, tragedy struck when Jane’s beloved landlord passed away. She found herself in a state of uncertainty, wondering who would inherit the property and become her new landlord. Would her lease be terminated or her rent increased? But lucky for Jane, fate had something much brighter in store for her.

To her utmost surprise and relief, Jane, along with another long-term tenant of Perrett’s property, was gifted their respective apartments after his passing. From being a tenant, Jane suddenly became a property owner – a dream come true for her at the age of 75.

A Benevolent Soul’s Lasting Legacy

John Perrett, known for his generous nature, had undergone a kidney transplant years prior to his passing. As a way of expressing his gratitude, he bequeathed a significant portion of his considerable fortune, amounting to approximately AUD$18.6 million, to the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Nephrology Department. Furthermore, he also left one of his flats to the hospital, which was later sold for AUD$400,000.

This extraordinary act of kindness truly reflects the person John Perrett was. Jane fondly remembers the moment Perrett informed her about her unexpected windfall, saying, “Then one day he just rang me and said, ‘My solicitor’s here, can you please give me your full name, because I’m leaving you your unit.’ I thought I hadn’t heard it right. Surely not. For the whole time I had known him, (leaving all his money to charity) was always what he was going to do.”

A Joyous New Chapter

Jane, while mourning the loss of her kind-hearted landlord, feels an overwhelming sense of relief knowing that she finally has a place to call her own. Over the years, she has lovingly cared for her rented home, transforming it into a personal sanctuary. “I treated this place like it was my own. When I first came here there was no garden out the back. Because I was living here, I planted lots of plants and flowers, which are still here today,” she shared, reminiscing about her journey.

Perrett valued his friendship with Jane and recognized the loyalty she displayed as his tenant all those years. His generous act of leaving her the apartment speaks volumes about the bond they shared. It is a heartwarming reminder of how small acts of kindness can have a significant impact on people’s lives.
