The quick thinking and bravery of pilot Damir Yusupov have garnered him high praise and the title of hero. After both engines of a Ural Airlines passenger plane were knocked out by birds, Yusupov remained calm and focused, successfully landing the aircraft in a Russian cornfield. The incident, which occurred near Moscow, prompted comparisons to the renowned “Miracle on the Hudson” where Captain Chesley Sullenberger landed a U.S. Airways plane in the Hudson River. Yusupov’s actions undoubtedly saved the lives of the 233 people onboard and showcased the extraordinary skill and bravery of pilots in emergency situations.

“I wasn’t afraid. I did what I had to do… I saved the plane, the passengers, the crew. I think that was the only decision. I don’t think I’m a hero,” shared Yusupov during a press conference in Yekaterinburg. Despite his modesty, his life-saving actions speak volumes.

The crash landing left 74 people seeking medical assistance, with 23 requiring hospitalization for injuries sustained during the incident. Fortunately, all but one person have been released after receiving treatment. Emergency officials, as well as the rest of the crew, have acknowledged Yusupov’s outstanding leadership and have honored him with the title of Hero of Russia, along with co-pilot Georgy Murzin. The remaining crew members were also recognized with the Order of Courage for their instrumental role in quickly evacuating the aircraft.

Yusupov’s extensive experience and expertise played a crucial role in the safe landing. With over 3,000 flying hours, he is a highly skilled pilot who joined Ural Airlines in 2013 and became a captain just last year. His passion for aviation led him to pursue a career in flying, despite initially following in his father’s footsteps as a lawyer. His dedication and determination are evident in his remarkable achievements.

In light of this harrowing experience, Yusupov has expressed the need for a rest. “I’m on vacation now, and I’ll rest while the investigation into the crash is carried out,” he stated. Such respite is well-deserved after the incredible feat he accomplished.

Yusupov’s heroic actions serve as a reminder of the crucial role highly skilled pilots play in ensuring passenger safety. Their ability to remain composed under immense pressure is essential. The lives Yusupov saved are a testament to his unwavering commitment to the well-being of his passengers. His bravery will be remembered for generations to come.
