In a recent turn of events, Dr Dre, the renowned music artist, has successfully prevented Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene from using his music in any context related to her political career. This action came after Greene used Dr Dre’s 1999 hit “Still Dre” as the soundtrack for a promotional video.

The video, which was posted on January 9th, depicts the far-right Georgia lawmaker walking out of her office in slow motion to the iconic notes of the song, featuring Snoop Dogg. However, after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from Dr Dre’s lawyer, Howard E King, Greene’s lawyers acknowledged the letter but did not admit to any wrongdoing.

Through her lawyers, Greene stated that she would no longer use Dr Dre’s copyrighted music in any political campaigns or on social media platforms that she controls. Despite this response, Dr Dre’s lawyer made it clear that the initial use of the song was seen as Greene “wrongfully exploiting” it to promote her divisive and hateful political agenda.

Taking a firm stand, Dr Dre himself stated, “I don’t license my music to politicians, especially someone as divisive and hateful as this one.” This highlights the artist’s refusal to associate his music with politicians like Greene, who has been known to promote antisemitic, white supremacist, and far-right conspiracy theories.

It is worth noting that the video showcased Greene’s controversial views right from the start, with a sign proclaiming, “There are two genders, male and female!” However, the video was swiftly removed from Twitter after a copyright infringement report was filed.

In response to the removal, Greene attempted to defend her use of the song, stating on Twitter, “While I appreciate the creative chord progression, I would never play your words of violence against women and police officers, and your glorification of the thug life and drugs.”

This incident serves as a reminder that artists have the right to control the use of their music and may choose not to associate it with individuals or causes that go against their values. Dr Dre’s action in blocking Greene’s use of his music demonstrates his commitment to protecting his artistic integrity and distancing himself from divisive figures in politics.
