In 1964, the same year the Civil Rights Act was introduced, Checker and Lodders tied the knot. They were both 22 years old when they said their vows at Temple Lutheran Church in Pennsauken, New Jersey. Rev. George L. Garver, who officiated their wedding ceremony, made no mention of the interracial nature of their marriage, focusing instead on their love and commitment.
Despite facing discrimination when attempting to purchase a home in Philadelphia, Checker and Lodders remained resilient. They eventually bought a house outside the city, where they still reside today. Their love and understanding have been the foundation of their lasting marriage, which has produced three successful children and brought them seven grandchildren.
In 2016, on Reverend Garver’s 100th birthday, Checker and Lodders visited their former pastor to celebrate their enduring bond. Their story is a testament to the power of love, defying societal barriers and overcoming challenges.
