Tennessee couple married for 69 years spent final hours holding hands

Love knows no bounds, and this heartwarming story of a Tennessee couple proves just that. Tommy and Virginia Stevens shared a touching final moment together at a Tennessee hospital before their deaths. They had been married for almost seven decades, and their love remained strong till the very end.

Tommy Stevens, fondly known as Doyle Thomas “Tommy” Stevens Jr., and Virginia McKarem first met in high school and continued their journey together at the University of Tennessee. They tied the knot on September 9, 1954. Throughout their life, Tommy worked as a transportation manager, served in the U.S. Army, and eventually founded his own company. Virginia not only worked alongside him but also actively participated in various community activities.

The couple settled in Memphis, raised two children, Karen and Greg, and later relocated to Franklin to be closer to their family. However, as time went on, Tommy faced health challenges due to Alzheimer’s disease. Both Tommy and Virginia ended up in the hospital – Tommy for sepsis and pneumonia and Virginia for injuries from a fall. But the compassionate staff at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) helped bring them back together.

Tommy and Virginia were placed in neighboring rooms and, eventually, a bed was arranged for Virginia beside Tommy’s. They held hands throughout their time at the hospital, finding comfort and solace in each other’s presence. Their love and bond were captured in a poignant photograph.

Karen Kreager, their daughter, shared how the family reminisced about cherished memories and celebrated their togetherness. For them, the most important thing was that their parents were united till the end. Dr. Mohana Karlekar, the medical director of VUMC’s Palliative Care Program, observed Virginia’s undying love and her wish to be by Tommy’s side until the end.

On September 8, Tommy passed away with Virginia and their family by his side. Nine days later, Virginia joined him in eternal rest. Their obituary beautifully sums up their love story: “What a love story. In life, in death, in life eternal. Together.”

This heartwarming tale reminds us of the power of love and the lasting bond between soulmates. It’s a testament to the strength and beauty of long-lasting marriages. Let this story inspire you to cherish your loved ones and hold on tight to the precious moments shared.
