David Tolley, a talented pianist from Dublin, Ohio, had been studying piano since he was just five years old. His love for music was nurtured by his mother, who recognized his natural talent and arranged piano lessons for him.

But it was one unexpected night that completely transformed Tolley’s life.

On December 19, 1985, Tolley found himself in the audience of the popular television show, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Little did he know that this particular episode would turn out to be a life-altering experience.

During the show, Carson announced that the scheduled guest, classical pianist Horatio Gutierrez, was unable to perform due to a hand injury. Seizing the opportunity, Carson asked if anyone in the audience knew how to play the piano.

With excitement and determination, Tolley raised his hand, catching Carson’s attention. He was invited on stage to showcase his talent and choose a song to play. Tolley chose to perform “Memories” from the musical Cats, leaving the audience in awe of his skill and passion for music.

That night marked the beginning of a new chapter in Tolley’s life. The next day, his phone started ringing incessantly with offers to perform at various events, parties, and even opportunities to work in the film industry. His career as a pianist took off, all because he seized the unexpected opportunity that came his way.

Today, David Tolley is an accomplished pianist and an associate professor of Music Composition, Recording/Production, and Music Industry at Delaware State University. His remarkable journey includes graduating as valedictorian from Ohio’s first Performing Arts High School, earning double Bachelor’s degrees in Piano Performance and Music Composition, and a Master’s degree in Composition from The Ohio State University.

Tolley’s talents have taken him far, allowing him to work on projects for renowned figures such as Steven Spielberg. He has also contributed to the creation of original music for Disneyland theme parks in Paris and Tokyo.
