Police dogs are not just pets, they are brave colleagues who play a pivotal role in law enforcement. These exceptional dogs assist in crucial police operations, such as tracking down missing persons. To their fellow officers, they are more than just working dogs, they are cherished companions.

When the time comes for these loyal and hardworking K9s to bid farewell, it is important to give them a respectful send-off, honoring their dedication and heroism. One terminally ill K9 recently experienced a touching final farewell from her comrades.

Meet Candy, a German Shepherd who served as a narcotics detection dog at the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office since 2014. During her nearly decade-long service, Candy contributed to over 2,900 operational searches, leading to the seizure of 278 pounds of illegal narcotics, according to the sheriff’s office.

Candy shared a special bond with her handler, Master Deputy II Anthony “Tony” Natalzia. “She went everywhere with me,” Natalzia shared. “You see these dogs more than you see your family.” However, as time went on, Natalzia noticed Candy’s health declining. She developed a limp and lost her appetite. A visit to the veterinarian revealed devastating news – Candy had terminal cancer that had spread throughout her body.

With the cancer rapidly progressing, Natalzia made the heartbreaking decision to end Candy’s suffering by having her euthanized. But before saying their final goodbyes, Candy was given the opportunity to bid farewell to her police colleagues in a remarkable way.

On a Monday, officers organized a ceremonial final walkout for Candy at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center. As the retiring K9 made her way through the halls, officers lined up, saluting her for her service. Emotions ran high as many officers visibly expressed their heartfelt farewells.

Throughout the walkout, Candy clutched her favorite tennis ball, a beloved companion. Following the touching ceremony, Natalzia drove Candy to the veterinary clinic, where she peacefully passed away.

Candy had been scheduled to retire this year, and Natalzia now feels robbed of the opportunity to spend more time with his loyal companion. “You think you’re going to have some time with your dog after they retire, so I feel cheated on that end of it,” Natalzia expressed. “But as a responsible handler, there was no way I could let her suffer to be selfish.”

While Natalzia will always cherish the memories of Candy, he has stepped into a new role as the handler of a new K9 named Pablo. He hopes to build the same strong bond and work harmoniously with Pablo, just like he did with Candy.

This heartwarming final farewell to a heroic dog tugs at our heartstrings. Rest in peace, Candy ❤️💙 Please share this touching story in memory of this remarkable K9.
