Mother and children using smartphones

A mom’s decision to monitor her children’s phones has sparked a debate online. Laura Muse, a 41-year-old mother from North Carolina, openly admits to confiscating her 15-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter’s phones before bed. However, instead of simply putting them away, she takes some time to go through their devices, ensuring that her teens are behaving.

Muse’s reasoning behind her actions is straightforward. As she rightfully states, she owns and pays for their phones, giving her the authority to monitor their usage. “People might think of it as a sign of disrespect or an invasion of privacy, but this is how I manage my ship,” she confidently explains.

This habit of checking her children’s phones began when they were around 11 years old and has continued into their teenage years. Muse emphasizes that she trusts her kids but wants to prevent them from engaging in inappropriate activities online and protect them from potential predators and scammers.

Interestingly, Muse has not only discovered potential issues but has also turned them into teachable moments. In the past, she caught her son, Cohen, posting shirtless pictures of himself online and promptly addressed the situation. “I’m not perfect, and I don’t expect my children to be perfect,” she admits. “But it’s important to keep an eye on things.”

Muse is not the only mom using this controversial method to monitor her children’s phone usage. Other parents have also resorted to snooping through their children’s phones to ensure there’s nothing compromising on them. One frustrated mother even found explicit pictures of her 15-year-old son that he had shared with his girlfriend early in the morning while scrolling through his phone.

While opinions on this matter differ, some supporting the idea of parental involvement and others stressing the importance of privacy, Muse remains unfazed. She believes that privacy comes with responsibility, and as long as she is the one paying the bills, there can be no true privacy.
