Her legs are amputated after using a common household product – Now she’s warning women everywhere - Pano Perspectives

A cautionary tale comes to us from California, where a woman named Lauren Wasser is bravely sharing her personal story to prevent other women from going through the same ordeal she has endured. It all started in 2012 when Lauren went to the hospital with what she thought were flu-like symptoms. Little did she know that her life was about to change forever.

After running some tests, doctors discovered that Lauren was not suffering from the flu, but rather from toxic shock syndrome (TSS) caused by bacterial toxins. And the culprit? A seemingly harmless household item – the tampon. It was a horrifying revelation.

Tampons, if left in for long periods, can lead to the onset of TSS, an incredibly dangerous infection. Unfortunately, Lauren fell into a coma for over a week, and when she finally woke up, she received the devastating news that her leg had to be amputated due to the infection. At the time, she was only 24 years old.

Since that tragic event, Lauren has made it her mission to raise awareness about the risks associated with tampon use and has even taken legal action against Kotex Natural Balance, the brand of tampons that caused her severe reaction. Her goal is clear – to ensure that no one else has to endure the same pain and loss.

Lauren understands the critical importance of educating consumers about the potential dangers of using tampons. As she puts it, “Considering that the vagina is the most absorbent part of a woman’s body and a gateway to many vital organs, it is crucial that people are aware of the reality of what could happen to them.” She passionately advocates for informed choices and the necessity of knowing the potential risks involved.

In an inspiring display of resilience, Lauren recently posed for a photo with Paralympic athlete Amy Purdy, who, like Lauren, has had her legs amputated. Together, they embody strength, determination, and the power of overcoming obstacles.

Currently, Lauren is preparing herself for another amputation in the coming months. While she acknowledges the inevitable physical changes that lie ahead, she maintains a positive spirit and readiness for the next chapter of her life. With every challenge she faces, Lauren proves that she is committed to living life to the fullest, regardless of the pain and hardships forced upon her.

Let us all cheer for Lauren on her journey and support her as she strives to make a difference, ensuring that others are spared from the devastating consequences of using a seemingly harmless household product.
