Early Career and Brady Bunch Days
Born on April 29, 1958, in Burbank, California, Eve Plumb started her acting journey as a child. She appeared in TV commercials and popular shows like Lassie. Interestingly, she never planned on becoming a child star. It all happened when a children’s agent moved next door and offered her a commercial opportunity. From there, her career took off.
From 1969 to 1974, Plumb portrayed Jan Brady on The Brady Bunch, which remains one of the most beloved TV shows of all time. Jan perfectly captured the awkwardness and insecurities of adolescence, often feeling left out or envious of her siblings. Who could forget the episode where she invents a boyfriend named “George Glass”? The Brady Bunch enjoyed immense success during its run and became an even bigger hit in syndication.
After the show’s conclusion, Plumb appeared in guest roles in numerous sitcoms. She also took on challenging roles, such as playing a teenage prostitute in the TV film Dawn: Portrait of a Teenage Runaway and its sequel.
Life After Brady Bunch
Transitioning from her famous childhood role proved to be a challenge for Plumb. Despite her success, she found it difficult to establish herself beyond being known as Jan Brady. In her own words, “I had so much success as a child, but once you age out of being the cute kid, then what? If you’re not ready for it, it can be very difficult.”
Whilst reluctant to continue playing Jan Brady, Plumb made a conscious decision to explore different opportunities and become an individual in her own right. She became the only Brady Bunch cast member to skip the much-maligned variety show The Brady Bunch Hour, with Geri Reischl stepping in as “Fake Jan.”
During an interview in 1977, Plumb expressed her desire for growth, saying, “I don’t mean to sound ungrateful. I loved the Brady Bunch years. I learned a lot, and the people were terrific to work with. But now I want to go on to other things and become an individual… not just one of the Brady group.”
However, she did reprise her role as Jan Brady in the 1981 special The Brady Girls Get Married, which led to the spin-off sitcom The Brady Brides.
Eve Plumb Today: A Multitalented Star
Throughout the years, Plumb has continued to pursue acting in a variety of non-Brady projects. She’s showcased her talent in theater productions, landed a guest role on Law and Order: SVU, and played Mrs. Murdoch in Grease Live. In addition to her successful acting career, she has also ventured into painting.
Despite her desire to explore different avenues, Plumb recognizes that she will always be Jan Brady in the hearts of many fans. She embraces her iconic role, stating, “I’ll always be Jan Brady to so many people. I can’t escape it, but I can do other things.” With her incredible grace and humor, she even jokes, “Isn’t [Jan] dead yet?”
Today, at 65 years old, Eve Plumb remains a timeless beauty. Recently, she graced the red carpet at the premiere of Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, showcasing a stunning new look with short hair. Fans on social media have been raving about how incredible she looks.
